Preserving a legacy since the birth of Calcutta City

Religion - Rituals

The cemeteries have deep religious significance amongst the believers and the Christian community in general. On days such as the All Souls’ Day, All Saints’ Day, Easter Sunday, New Year Day, Christmas Day and Good Friday, large number of Christian population of the city from all denominations assemble for individual and collective worship and performing religious rituals in all these cemeteries including the South Park Street Cemetery. Everyday different burials take place in the cemeteries and families and individuals come to pay respect in memory of the departed soul round the year especially on the birth date, date of demise, date of anniversary etc. The Cemeteries therefore generate indirect employments to several individuals/families irrespective of cast, creed or religion. The Govt. cemeteries being large and located in areas infested with anti socials, the CBB has to remain vigilant all the time to protect the dignity and sentiment of the minority for which the Executive Member supported by his team have to spend quality time daily in these cemeteries with dedication and without any scope or motive of personal gain or profit.
